The Ramones
Road to Ruin
/sire; 1978/

A LIVE,  UNEDITED AND HUNGOVER STUDY OF THE RAMONES' "ROAD TO RUIN".

After a 7 hours-long dj set i slept 4 hours and then woke up listening to the Ramones.

SEB WOOd got me an original vinyl copy of Road to Ruin for my 16th birthday last December. I'm a grown up now. And well, it's great, so i thought i'd talk about it. Incredible lines, stupid phrasing and catchy hooks. It's also a very dark record, if you scratch the stupid varnish.

It starts with the Blondie-esque "I Just Want to Have Something to Do." It's a slow starter, this one. "I Wanted Everything" is your standard ramones song, "Don't Come Close" is poppy, let's pay attention to "I Don't Want You", a disappointed expression of rejection after disappointment.

I don't care /I don't care /I don't care /I don' waaaaaannnyou /I don' waaaaaaannyou anymore.

yet he contradicts himself, showing that he, in fact, does care for the girl in the song:

I waaaannyou /I waaaaaanyou / I waaaaanyou to stay/ but i guess it just can't be that way

see?

ahem. "Needles and Pins" is a cover (zzzzz) and "I'm Against It" is punk at its most stupid, making "Ping Pong" rhyme with "Viet Cong."

HERE COMES SIDE B!!!!!!!!

this is the best half of the album. It starts with "I Wanna Be Sedated", an anthem for all the pill-poppers out there. Handclaps, a one-note solo, "ba ba ba ba"s, what else can you possibly want??

"Go Mental" It sounds more like "I've gone mean too," but i guess they couldn't speak properly. that's what drugs do to you, kids.

staring at my goldfish bowl/ popping phenobarbitol/ life is so beautiful/ i've gone meaaaaaantooool

But just when you thought it couldn't get any better, "Questioningly" shows up. It's a ballad! a girl comes to JR teels him "hey i know you" and he says:

yes i said you're a girl
that i once may have knew
but i don't love you anymore
why do you want to talk to me for ?
you should have just let me walk by
memories make us cry

and he finishes the song with:

memories make me cry
and i'm alone just me
just me

i really like the "i once may have knew" bit. The "just me" in the end sounds like JR's heart breaking. it's great, even though not really grammatically correct (GC). i mean, i'm smiling at him but i feel empathetic somehow.

"She's the One" is "damn catchy" as my grandpaw would say.

yeah yeah she's my girl/ the best girl in the whole wide world.

Bad Brain is about DRUG ABUSE! LOST FAME! ALIENTAION... ALINETAION A

ALIENATION.

there. so much for dislexia.

I used to go to parties
I used to drink champagne
(...)
now i'm on Bowery
I can't remember my name
Bad bad brain
Bad bad brain

"It's a Long Way Back" is a nice closer.

You by the phone
you all alone
it's a long way back to Germany

that's it, end of the song, end of the record, end of this review, thanks for paying attention.
