With an usual gesture, you put almost automatically in your cd player a new cd you’ve just grasped from the ones piling up, you press the ‘play’ button and you turn away to a daily task, and then, on the way, you vaguely start to hum a familiar harmony and to comment on the songs for the people around:

“Mmmh, they’re English… I can’t remember their name; something funny… listen up: the sound is so condensed... they just put their shoes on… and they sing… I like that. It’s shoegazing !”.

You’ll be disappointed and rejoiced at once, my friends: this cd comes from Russia.

“With a name like Hot Zex you can think I am reviewing some porn video with Traci Lords” once said a foreign reviewer (not Russian) about this group from Novossibirsk. By the way, Hot Zex much appeals to our western colleagues who haven’t fell into the rhetorical question trap: ‘why the hell these Russians do not sing in Russian ?’. English, Americans, Germans reviewed Hot Zex’s album « 7 love songs and a track about daily routine of an airport » as they would have reviewed any other indie-rock album, without making concessions to them because of their nationality (‘Russian’ here means second-rate art). In their writings, there is sometimes a delighted astonishment. Usually, these reviewers classify Hot Zex, conveniently but seriously, next to My Bloody Valentine Stone Roses, Stereolab, and God knows why Goo Goo Dolls and Live. Those bands are supposed to have been inspirational.

However, we are here taking into account another work by Hot Zex: a promo cd made up of five songs which is intended for radio airplay planners… Planners, ouch! Is there going to be any shoegazing, indie-rock on Russian radios ? Hot Zex’s music is devoid of toponymic markers. It is a sane option to Russian rock’s unhealthy expansion. There isn’t an ounce of national identity in these Siberians. Their music sounds British, they sing in English. The voice sometimes sinks in a dense instrumental flow. Is it annoying ? In fact, the voice intermingles itself with the music and becomes an instrument whose significance is equal to that of the single-chorded guitar. The drum machine keeps the rhythm going on, which hinders the song’s freedom but at the same time it enables not to break up the harsh rhythmic pace. This cd contains two versions of the track entitled ‘Planets’, one is instrumental and the other is endowed with lyrics. It’s a dancing, lively and quite sad cd: as if My Bloody Valentine had made the arrangements for U2’s most luminous numbers.

After ten years-time playing shoegazing, Hot Zex might belong to Manchester, who knows

Dans un mouvement habituel, on met presque automatiquement dans le lecteur cd un nouveau disque provenant d’une pile qui s’accumule de plus en plus, on appuie sur ‘play’ et on se détourne vers une tâche quotidienne, puis au fur et à mesure on fredonne de manière confuse une harmonie familière et on fait des commentaires pour les personnes présentes:

« Mmh, des anglais… je ne me souviens plus de leur nom; quelque chose d’amusant… écoutez ça: le son est si condensé…ils ont mis leur chaussure… et ils chantent… j’aime bien. Du shoegazing ! ».

Vous serez déçus et content à la fois, les amis: ce disque provient de Russie.

« Après avoir lu le nom Hot Zex, vous pourriez penser que je chronique une video porno avec Traci Lords », a écrit un jour un critique étranger (non-russe) à propos de ce groupe de Novossibirsk. D’ailleurs, soit dit en passant, Hot Zex a beaucoup plu à nos collègues de l’ouest qui ne se sont pas posé la question rhétorique: « mais pourquoi donc ces russes ne chantent pas en russe ? ». Des anglais, des américains, des allemands ont chroniqué l’album de Hot Zex « 7 love songs and a track about daily routine of an airport » comme n’importe quel autre disque indie-rock, sans concession par rapport à l’origine russe du groupe (comprendre ici ‘origine russ’’ comme ‘images d’Épinal’ ou art au rabais). Dans leurs écrits se glisse parfois un étonnement ravi. D’habitude les chroniqueurs classent Hot Zex, de manière pratique et tout à fait sérieuse, aux côtés de My Bloody Valentine, Stone Roses, Stereolab, et on ne sait pourquoi Goo Goo Dolls ou encore Live. Ces groupes sont censés les avoir influencés.

Cependant nous avons ici affaire à une autre œuvre de Hot Zex: un cd promo composé de 5 chansons destiné en théorie aux directeurs des programmes radio… Les directeurs des programmes, aïe ! Y aura-t-il bientôt du shoegazing, de la noisy-pop sur les radios russes ? La musique de Hot Zex est dépourvue de signes toponymiques. C’est une saine alternative à l’expansion maladive du rock russe. Il n’y a pas une once d’identité russe chez ces Sibériens. Leur musique sonne britannique. Ils chantent en anglais. La voix sombre parfois dans un flux instrumental dense. Est-ce gênant ? En fait, la voix s’entremêle à la musique, devenant un instrument pas plus important que la guitare monocorde. La boite à rythme tient la cadence, ce qui constitue quelque peu un obstacle au fait que les chansons puissent gagner en liberté mais cela permet en même temps de ne pas rompre le rythme soutenu des compositions. Deux versions du titre ‘Planets’ sont présentes: une instrumentale et l’autre avec des paroles. C’est un disque dansant, alerte et assez triste: comme si My Bloody Valentine avait arrangé les chansons les plus lumineuses de U2.

Peut-être qu’au bout de dix ans de shoegazing, Hot Zex sera à sa place à Manchester, qui sait ?

Привычным движением ты почти бездумно втыкаешь в cd-проигрыватель очередной компакт из накопившейся стопки, жмёшь “play”, отворачиваешься и принимаешься за повседневные дела, попутно подмурлыкивая смутно знакомым гармониям и комментируя окружающим:

«Прочитав название Hot Zex, вы могли подумать, что я рецензирую какое-нибудь порно-видео с Трейси Лордс*», - написал однажды об этой новосибирской группе кто-то из иностранных критиков. К слову сказать, западным коллегам Hot Zex пришлись по вкусу – и они не задались риторическим вопросом: «ну почему эти русские не поют по-русски?» Британцы, американцы, немцы рецензировали хотзековский "Album -- 7 love songs and a track about daily routine of an airport" как вполне себе состоявшийся факт инди-искусства – без скидок на «российскость» (в данном случае синоним «лубочности»). Иногда проскальзывало восхищённое удивление. Обычно же рецензенты буднично, деловито – и на полном серьёзе! – ставили  Hot Zex рядом с My Bloody Valentine, Stone Roses, Stereolab и почему-то Goo Goo Dolls с Live (aka “inspired by”).

Однако сейчас мы рассматриваем иную работу от Hot Zex. Теоретически промо-компиляция из пяти песен предназначена программным директорам радиостанций… Директора, ау! Имеет ли будущее shoegazer, noisepop в российском радиоэфире? Музыка Hot Zex лишена топонимических примет. Это здоровая альтернатива нездоровой экспансии русского рока. В этих сибиряках нет ни грамма этничности.

Они играют британскую музыку и поют на английском. Порой вокал тонет в плотной инструментальной струе. Стесняется? Скорее – сам сливается со струёй, становится инструментом не более важным, чем монотонная гитара. Драм-машина оформляет ритм: это несколько стесняет свободу песни – и одновременно не позволяет развалиться строгой, цельной композиции. Песня “Planets” представлена в двух вариантах: инструментальном и со словами. Это танцевальная, бодрая и всё же чуть грустная пластинка: словно My Bloody Valentine аранжировали самые светлые произведения U2.

Кто знает, может быть, спустя 10 лет шугейзинга пригодятся Hot Zex и в самом Мэдчестере?
