LOVE, GOD, MURDER (who says Nick Cave ?), one of Johnny Cash compilations’ title sums up pretty well the singer’s obsessions. “The Man in Black” (who says Nick Cave ?), as he is nicknamed, releases at the same time a new album and a few reissues. Being seriously ill (Johnny Cash is already unable to tour because of his cancer), this may be here his last record.

This new album is the fourth of the American Recordings as Cash himself calls them: they contain original songs, traditional songs and covers. One just has to remind of his cover of say, “I See a Darkness” (by Palace), to know that his covers are excellent and that they get you in the guts.

The opening song “The Man Comes Around”, partly thanks to its lyrics coming from the Bible, sets the tone of a remarkable, outstanding record.

Among the covers which are completely altered (and ten times improved in my opinion) thanks to the singer’s voice and intonations, and to his class, there are “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails, “I Hung my Head” by Sting (wonderful), “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode, “Desperado” by The Eagles. The intensity of these songs that Johnny Cash appropriates is sometimes amazing. He invited two guests on the album. Fiona Apple is singing the backing vocals on a barer and refined version of “Bridges Over Troubled Waters” originally by Paul Simon. And Nick Cave who finally sings with his master for an Hank Williams cover “I’m so Lonely I Could Cry” to which everyone should listen at least once in their life to hear these voices intertwine to perfection.

The last track entitled “We’ll Meet Again” sounds like a farewell. We may even consider it as  an ultimate song by Johnny Cash who feels here his death coming soon. American 4 : The Man Comes Around is a brilliant album devoid of embarrassing flourishes and extremely touching.

Le titre d’une des compilations de Johnny Cash résume parfaitement les obsessions du chanteur, il s’agit de LOVE, GOD, MURDER (qui a dit Nick Cave ?). « The Man In Black » (qui a dit Nick Cave ?) comme il est surnommé sort un nouvel album parallèlement aux rééditions d’anciens. Le chanteur étant très malade, ce sera peut-être son dernier (il ne peut plus tourner à cause de son cancer).

Ce nouvel album est le 4^e de ce que le chanteur a baptisé American recordings, un mélange de chansons originales, traditionnelles ainsi que de reprises. Il suffit de se rappeler sa reprise du « I See a Darkness » de Palace pour savoir que ses reprises sont excellentes et prennent aux tripes.

La chanson d’ouverture « The Man Comes Around », avec ses paroles empruntées à des passages bibliques, donnent le ton d’un disque remarquable, marquant.

Au chapitre des reprises - qui grâce à la voix, à la classe et aux intonations du chanteur changent du tout au tout (et en 10 fois meilleures à mon avis) – on trouve « Hurt » de Nine Inch Nails, « I Hung My Head » de Sting (merveilleux), « Personal Jesus » de Depeche Mode, « Desperado » des Eagles. L’intensité de ces chansons qu’il s’approprie laisse parfois pantois.

Deux guests apparaissent sur l’album : Fiona Apple fait les chœurs sur une version de « Bridges Over Troubled Waters » de Paul Simon bien moins dégoulinante que l’originale et Nick Cave qui rencontre enfin son maître pour une reprise de Hank Williams « I’m so Lonesome I could Cry » que tout le monde devrait écouter au moins une fois dans sa vie, les voix des chanteurs se mélangeant parfaitement.

La dernière chanson « We’ll Meet Again » sonne comme un adieu. On peut même penser que c’est son dernier morceau, Johnny Cash sentant la mort proche. En tout cas, American 4 : The Man Comes Around est un album brillant, sans fioritures et extrêmement marquant.
