In order to understand what Art Brut's Gang Bang Rock & Roll is about, here are lines from some of the songs of the record.
"We're gonna be the band that writes the song that makes Israel and Palestine get along" - about a band that formed a band. (Formed a Band)
"he no longer listens to a-sides. he made me a tape of bootlegs and b-sides and every song, every single song in that tape said exactly the same thing: WHY DON'T OUR PARENTS WORRY ABOUT US ??? WHY DON'T OUR PARENTS WORRY ABOUT US???" -about a 22 years old little brother (My Little Brother)
"I haven't seen her in ten years, nine months, four days, six hours, thirteen minutes, five seconds" -about how he's still in love with Emily Kane. (Emily Kane"
"Don't tell your friends! Don't tell your friends! I promess it won't ever happen again" -about sexual impotence (Rusted Guns of Milan)
"I've seen her naked, twice! I've seen her naked, twice!" -about a brand new girlfriend (Good Weekend)
"and wow! there's something amazing about that blue, it makes me want to step outside! comprends" -about modern art (Modern Art)
It reminds me of Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted with a cleaner sound, more sense and a more focused, punk drive. It reminds me of Ikara Colt too, except funnier and a bit less punk. If you're good enough to add 1+1 then you will understand that Art Brut sounds a lot like the Fall too, except less psychotic. They sound post punk with angular guitar riffs and a singer that doesn't really sing, except when he does. They write songs with their tongue stuck in their cheek, and it makes the whole thing heavily enjoyable. Humour is something rare in rock & roll and here it's smart and brilliantly effortless. Enjoy!
